In today’s online society, attorney websites are more important than ever. Whether your website is large or small, one cold hard truth remains constant: your online visitors—your potential clients—will base their entire opinion of your law firm within half a minute. Knowing this, it’s amazing to me that the great bulk of small law firms consider their web site to be little more than an afterthought. This is literally insane. With the internet being the dominant method for consumers to get their information, to ignore your firm’s website is to ignore your business itself. For better or worse, your web site is telling the entire tale of your firm: act one through five. It’s your introduction, your sales pitch, your credibility, and your trust. It’s the business end of your entire attorney marketing effort.
Small Law Firm Websites: Is Your Site a Tragedy in the Making?
For most small law firms, it is. There is simply nothing on the site to entice visitors to act. There’s a little information, maybe a picture of the building or staff, a Bio of the partners, and the phone number. “Please give us a call.”
Wrong. Go look at your website right now and ask yourself this: is this everything you want a potential client to know about you? Your complete story is being told on your web site. And for the great majority of law firms out there, the story is woefully incomplete.
All the information a prospective client might be looking for needs to be addressed on the website in a way that directs them toward the specific goal of contacting your firm. A successful website is it’s own self-contained consultant as well as a salesperson, subtly guiding the web surfer through the entire sales process from introduction, to establishing a relationship, building trust, and then enticing them to take a predetermined action: in most cases, contacting the firm.
Anything less an your law firm’s web site is a complete waste of the most valuable real estate you own: your internet presences.

The first thing you need to do is take a long hard look at the current state of your own law firm website. Look with the eyes of a client not a lawyer. Is it interesting? Does it establish credibility? Trust? Above all, does it address at the emotional level the problem that a potential client to your firm would logically be seeking? And does it offer a way that your firm can give a clear and immediate solution to that problem?
If your site fails to do this, you must take action right away to correct the problem. Consumer expectations have changed and if your website doesn’t provide this for people, you can be 100% sure they will be find it somewhere else on the web. And you’ve lost another potential sale.
Remember, don’t neglect your website because for most people, it’s the only impression they will ever have of your small law firm.
